Planning, sizing and building an aquaponics system. There are three distinct steps for creating your aquaponics system. Aquaponics is the combination of raising fish and vegetation together, using the fish composted manure as nutrients for your plants.
Aquaponic systems can be scaled up or scaled down, depending on your production needs. A small aquaponic system can produce up to 100 pounds of fresh fish such as tilapia twice per year. aquaponics diy let’s not forget the 200-pound vegetable yield!
After the water from the fish holding tanks is filtered through the growing beds, it is returned to the fish holding tank. The fish live in a clean healthy water supply and the cycle is repeated again and again. Your plants will grow like gangbusters in the nutrient rich water in the aquaponic gardening system.
For beginners, start with small growing beds to keep the initial mistakes minimal. This enables you to decide which Aquaponics setup will work best for you. Once you are comfortable with the system, you can always expand its size.
Unlike conventional hydroponics, aquaponics is 100% organic, and it shows in health of the plants and quality of vegetables. It allows you to grow many times more in a much smaller space and with less work. Unlike traditional gardening where you have to constantly water, weed, fertilize and battle with slugs, snails, gophers and other pests, with aquaponic your biggest chore will be feeding the fish. For many people, that is one of the most enjoyable parts, but it can also be done with automatic feeders for those who are just too busy.
A garage or even a spare room in your home can be a great place to get started. No need to rent an industrial space to get started. You can get started in front of a sunny window or a small greenhouse in your back yard. If you don’t have access to these things, artificial grow lights will work, although they add to the cost.
