Finding nutritious food is becoming increasingly difficult. In the grocery stores there are many products marked «healthy» or «natural», but that is usually just marketing. More people are eating processed food that are all about convenience and taste than nutrition. Even the so called fresh produce is grown with all kinds of chemicals and practices that many question. Not to mention the flavor of most produce doesn’t come near to true organic fresh grown produce. If the flavor is not there, do you think the full nutrition is there too?
The great thing about this form of gardening is the sheer amount of extra crops that you can grow in the same space of a normal garden. Let’s say you have a square metre of soil, normally this would let you grow 10 cabbages. With an aquaponics system you can grow lots more because the plants are in grow beds which are stacked up on top of each other.
As a bonus, you get fish. You can grow fish to eat, breed them to sell to others, there are many possibilities for fish that can cover the cost of their food or even make a profit. You can even grow your own fish food. Many tilapia will eat just about anything, and they are very efficient at growing protein.
Of course, in order for the water to be kept clean and crops to grow the fish aquaponics system must be balanced. This is biological system which many say requires three things which are the fish and the plants and also bacteria. Some bacteria is a must as some bacteria is required for life to continue. There is a forth component and that is water. Water is also important in this balanced system because the fish require it and so do the plants.
As an example… imagine you had a 2′ x 3′ garden filled with a couple plants. aquaponic supplies system can easily grow 10x as many plants as a normal soil garden can and because it fixes the watery taste problem of hydroponics whatever you grow tastes great!
aquaponic gardening is a fairly new way of growing organic food and is a hybrid of the hydroponics set ups but with no chemicals used at all. The most time consuming part is getting your fish tank ready for your fish to live in. You need to fill the tank set up the heater and filter and then leave it for two or three weeks so that natural bacteria can start to develop, a pinch of fish food can speed this up or drop a little piece of meat in the tank. After this water maturing period the tank will be crystal clear and ready for you fish.
Aquaponics systems can be compact and take up little space. And unlike a traditional garden, they can be easily assembled and re-assembled. So if you move to a different home, you can take it with you. It can be placed outdoors, if your climate permits, or in a greenhouse or even indoors if you can get enough light. If you don’t have enough light, grow lights are an option, although they will increase costs.
There is organic food available at the store, but you usually pay a premium for it. And just because the label says organic, often times doesn’t mean it is better, it just costs more. If you want to grow your own truly organic food, aquaponics makes it more practical for more people. You can grow many times more vegetables in a smaller space, plus fish. All this with much less time and work than just growing vegetables in the ground.
